Grow It

Want to eat organic foods, but don’t love the price tag, or the trips to the farmer’s market? One simple solution: grow your lunch!

You can buy a packet of organic seeds and a big bag of quality soil for under $10, and the sizable harvest and personal satisfaction you’ll get from a home garden far outweigh the cost! Start small with whatever you think you can handle – a single tomato plant in a pot on your porch, a wide barrel filled with herbs, or a 4′x8′ raised bed for mixed vegetables, it’s your choice. Grow what you like, and you’ll easily incorporate more fresh produce into your diet. There are hundreds of gardening blogs online that offer free advice, or talk to the folks at your local nursery or garden center. Or call me! I could talk gardening for days, and would love to answer your questions for you.

Your garden can also connect you with others: share seeds and/or transplants with friends, and everyone reaps the rewards! And if you have kids, get them in on the action: they are more likely to eat veggies if they helped grow them, too.

There are few things tastier than biting into a ripe, fresh-from-the-vine tomato, especially when you grew it yourself.
