Growing Food From Kitchen Scraps

It may sound too good to be true, but you really CAN grow food from many of the scraps you’d normally toss! Take this onion for instance – it had some long roots intact (albeit dry) at the base, so after using the rest of it for our various recipes, we set it up just above some water in our window garden, and low-and-behold new onion tops started growing! This was photographed after approx. 10 days, and was planted in our garden right after I shot this.

It’ll be several months before we can harvest the three onions growing from this base – we’ll know they’re ready when the leaves collapse completely – but when we do, it’ll be fresh onions free of charge. 🙂
