Joy Miyatake

Certified Personal Trainer / Yoga Instructor (RYT-200).  Joy is a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE), and a registered yoga teacher through YogaFit. She is also currently enrolled in an RYT-300 program focusing on yoga therapy.

For Joy, health has always been one of her personal priorities, but even more so after being diagnosed with arthritis a few years ago. After severe pain left her unable to do the things she loves and medication was not helping, Joy turned her attention towards eating mindfully and moderately, along with consistent exercise. She was able to wean off the meds, and is now more active than ever. “I knew I felt better having yoga asana/fitness in my life so I eventually became an instructor to share what I am passionate about. I’ve always taken pleasure from sharing my good fortune. If a book or film moves me, I tell people about it. If I perfect a new recipe, I cook it for my friends and family. So for me, teaching fitness makes perfect sense!”

PHILOSOPHY
Anyone can do yoga! And everyone can exercise. We may all start from different places, but any – and every – body needs mindful movement.

WHAT MAKES YOUR TRAINING UNIQUE?
I have worked with a wide variety of people, including young and old (from ages 4 to 96), and from many — some extremely difficult — walks of life. I currently volunteer with the California adaptive rowing program, where I coach people with amputated limbs or spinal cord injuries how to row on the water. They’ve helped me learn to expect a lot from our amazing bodies!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love that I can offer a healthy, mindful exercise to anyone, regardless of their age and ability. And I love the smile that comes after a good workout!

WHY WOULD SOMEONE OPT FOR PRIVATE YOGA PRACTICE / TRAINING INSTEAD OF GROUP CLASSES?
I believe private yoga lessons would benefit anyone in their practice. I especially recommend private lessons to special needs students, for whom standard yoga poses might not make sense. Since each body is different, all students would benefit from occasional private lessons to supplement their group practice.

And private training would be an excellent choice for anyone. Having a trainer choose the best exercises for an individual is the best way to go, because we all have different bodies, abilities as well as strengths and weaknesses. Your trainer helps you find the best ones for you.
